David P. Cresap

I have been writing poetry for over half a century, and I believe that many experiences in my life, including the start of my writing journey, were guided rather than accidental. This belief is reinforced by my own life experiences, such as the discovery of historical connections between my family and others. For example, my poem Kindred’s Story in my first book was inspired by the true stories of David Eccles and Alonzo Farnsworth, two friends who went their separate ways in the 1840s, only for their descendants to marry generations later. Similarly, I discovered an unexpected lineage link between my wife and me, which made me question whether these events were mere coincidences or something more.

My poetry often stems from personal experiences, religious discussions, and the challenges I’ve faced. Through these poems, I’ve explored profound questions and ideas that have enriched my understanding of life. One particularly enlightening experience was discovering that I share many traits with my grandson, who was diagnosed with High Functioning Asperger’s Disease. This realization helped me understand my own behaviors and the way my mind works. It also revealed that many successful individuals have this condition, which drives them to explore ideas deeply and thoroughly—a trait that has been a blessing in my life.

Over time, my poetry has become a journal of sorts, reflecting the circumstances and lessons of my life. These poems have provided clarity, comfort, and insight, not just for me but for others who read them. The universal nature of my poetry allows readers to connect with the themes and apply the teachings to their own lives. The purpose of this anthology is to share these poems with others, offering them the chance to experience the same growth and understanding that I have. My hope is that readers will come to appreciate the wisdom in these poems and realize that they are not alone in their learning process.
